A Grace-Filled Run

I'm back to running. I usually run at the Manila Polo Club track. I love running at the field, amongst the trees and feel the wind in my hair and hear the sound of dirt hitting my shoes. I consider this worship time as I listen to praise songs and glorify God with my body by keeping it fit and healthy.

No, I'm not a member. I actually call myself: "nakiki-member". In other words, I have a friend who is a member and he has allowed me to drop his name when I am asked so I could use the facilities.

Yesterday, by God's grace, I was able to do a 30-min Sunday run. Well, I say it was by God's grace because, I almost didn't run. Due to a stricter no card, no service policy, a security guard stopped me in the middle of my warmup and asked if I have my MC card. I confidently dropped my friend's name and then, the unusual happened. The guard asked me to go to the admin & register as they no longer allow non-members to use the facilities. I laughed incredulously as guards hardly ever stop me from running. I looked at my watch which says, 7:18am. I thought, "If I will have to look for the admin office and register, it will soon be too hot to run. Who knows if the admin is even open early on a Sunday?!"

Then a miracle happened by God's grace & generosity. A lady walked over and enthusiastically said, "Oh Hi! You're finally here! I was waiting for you!" Then shows her card to the guard and said, "She's my friend... (Scrambles for a name) Lyn! [Me: Lyn?!] We have an appointment. (Then to me) Oh, you want to run? Go ahead! Enjoy!" The guard scratched his head, looked at me, said something to the person on the other end of the walkie-talkie in his hand, then returned the card to the lady.

So I went ahead to introduce myself and thank them. And the lady with her foreigner companion said, "Enjoy!"

Warmup: light stretch, 5 mins jog
Workout: 20 mins light run (I try to keep up to green zone)
Cool down: 5 mins jog, stretching

And that's my grace-filled run. It's a good reminder that I walk this earth only by grace as I put my faith in Jesus who saved me by dying on the cross.

God does love us. He knows what we need even before we asked for it. Thank God for using other people to bless us. :)

January 6-12, 2012 was prayer and fasting week at our church in Victory Fort. For one week, we were supposed to choose either a water fast, liquid fast a or one meal fast. I chose a liquid fast and one day to do one meal because I had taping last Monday. I really experienced amazing revelations from God. He clearly showed me how God truly love us and how He wants to support us in our faith goals and answer our prayer requests.

I'd like to share with you a message that Pastor Carlos shared in one of the prayer meetings:

GOD'S LOVE TRANSFORMS. Once we have the knowledge and experienced the depth of God's love for us, it will transform us.

GOD'S LOVE IS INFINITE. The Apostle Paul said so in Ephesians 3:17-19. "And I pray that you being rooted and established in LOVE, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpassing knowledge -- that you may be filled to the measure fo all the fullness of God."

GOD'S LOVE IS DEFINITE. "For I am conviced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord." Romans 8:38-39

GOD'S LOVE IS PURE. "He who did not spare His own Son, but gave him up for us all -- how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?" Romans 8:32

"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose." Romans 8:28

GOD'S LOVE IS FREE. "I am the good Shepherd. The good Shepherd lays down his life for the sheep." John 10:11

"The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life... of my own accord." John 10:17-18

What I really loved most about the message is this:

GOD WOULD RATHER DIE THAN SPEND ETERNITY WITHOUT US.

God really wants a relationship with us. Will you let him?

My prayer is that you will seek him with all heart, mind and soul and that God will reveal himself to you in a very personal way. BE AMAZED!

I don't normally join Halloween festivities but some reason, I felt so excited dressing up for Halloween this year and geared up for the party my group of friends are planning at Republiq Club.

A few days left before the weekend and I finally decided on being Katy Perry in her Last Friday Night (TGIF) video!

Scoured the stores looking for neon colored skirt & blouse but most of the stuff that are out in the stores are from the fall collection so I had to make do with jewel tones to have a brightly colored top & a skirt. I found a bright pink sweater (P995) from Mango and shortened it. I found the green skirt (P699) at the Lifestyle section at the 2nd floor of Powerplant Mall, made the skirt shorter and sewed on the zipper (P32.75) myself. I made sure I had different colored shoes as well. Had to spend extra for purple shoes (the pink ones didn't have my size anymore, boohoo) but I thought it's reusable so it should be ok. The earrings were P50 from Rockwell Lifestyle section, bangles (P599) from a store at Hip in Rockwell. Bought a cheap pair of nerdy glasses (P149) from SM and wrapped packaging tape around the bridge part. Found a set of orange tumblers in SM home section for P100. I even tried to make fake braces from this youtuber using a paper clip and silver beads but couldn't find orthodontic gum that would keep them in my mouth... I lost them somehow at dinner over at my friend's place, but somehow pulled off the look with crimped hair courtesy of Jeffrey Robles, my hair & makeup artist. The result? See for yourself! Had so much fun putting it together! And check out the hotties that Katie found! Happy Halloween!

Crossfit Craze in Manila

As a fitness enthusiast, I love it when workouts are fun & varied. My friend Cristalle Henares introduced me to this cross training workout now avalable in Manila: Crossfit.

Crossfit is a fitness and lifestyle program that constantly uses different workouts (WODs or Workouts of the Day) everyday. It builds your competency to prepare you for any mental and physical consistency. It is designed to optimize physical competence and enhance cardiovascular and respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance, and accuracy. According to Crossfit.com, it is the "principal strength and conditioning program for many police academies and tactical operations teams, military special operations units, champion martial artists, and hundreds of other elite and professional athletes worldwide."

Executed at high intensity, workouts are no longer than 30 minutes and are timed, measured and done repeatedly. Workouts are based on organic, multi-jointed, natural movements. Proper technique and form are encouraged for maximum benefits.

Since Cristalle and I were newbies to the program, we were asked to an intro WOD composed of four types of exercise, as much rounds as we could within 20 minutes plus about 10 minutes ab workout afterwards.

Warm up: 20 reps jump rope

Main Workout: 1) wall balls, 2) pull ups, 3) box jumps and 4) burpees.

Ab workout: partner cranberry throws, ball passes up & down, & side to side

Cool down: Stretching

In the end, we was able to do 5 rounds but it was very intense. I had to stop a few times for about a minute to drink some water and catch my breath. But I love it! It was not only a really good workout, it was a lot of fun as well!

Moments at Worldvision Relief in Bulacan

A couple of weeks ago, typhoons Pedring (International name: Nesat) followed by Typhoon Quiel hit the Philippines one after another causing much damage to Central Luzon & Nueva Ecija. According to Inquirer, about 334,000 families were affected in the region, Bulacan being the worst hit province due to two rivers overflowed causing much damage to homes and livelihood in the area.

I had the rare priviledge of assisting Worldvision in the distribution of relief goods affected families in the area of Brgy. Sta Lucia in Calumpit, Bulacan. A large part of the road leading to the baranggay was still flooded and had been impassable for most vehicles for over a week. We had to ride military and dump trucks in order to pass through the thigh-high flood

When we got to the area of Brgy Sta Lucia, the flood had already subsided but I heard that the families there were unable to eat for about a week. Fortunately, Worldvision reached out to them as soon as they could. About 2,350 families received rice, canned goods & water. I was deeply touched when one mother asked to kiss and hug me as a gesture of thanks. It's gentle moments like that I value the most.

I'm amazed at how these survivors can still put on a smile inspite of what they have been through. I got the chance to talk to some of them & have heard of stories of the flood reaching to higher than human height. Families had to stay two days at the rooftop; they had no food for a week. One grandma even had a 10 day old baby with her. Three homes were washed out by the flood. I was inspired when one mother shared, "Di bale na ang gamit, napupundar iyon. Pasalamat na lang sa Diyos at buhay kami." So, amazed that in spite of that these people have been through, they can still manage to be grateful and have faith that somehow by God's grace, they will recover what they have lost.

Celebrating New Year's Eve at Times Square

Celebrating NYE every year is always a much awaited event for many. A lot of friends I know celebrated at home or out of town while others took great steps in order to get to a place where they can party with friends and have a full view of the festivities, mostly fireworks around the city.

On my 2010 holiday trip to the NYC with my family, my sister, her fiance and I decided to spend it at the Times Square, the infamous site for the annual balldrop for New Year's Eve. To celebrate NYE at this iconic landmark, the Times Square, nicknamed the Crossroads of the World, The Great White Way is definitely a must while in NYC.

I feel fortunate to have made connections with American businessman Micheal Rosenthal who was throwing a party for 100 people at his office located at the 16th floor of 1501 Broadway, a building somewhere between where the ball drops and where they hold the concerts at Times Square. So when I got his invite through a private social networking site, there is no way I was going to let this opportunity pass.

The NYPD block the roads to prepare for this annual occasion and most most people have to do great lengths, and arrive as early as 2pm in order to secure a good spot and watch the experience the countdown LIVE at the street party. We were given passes ahead of time and needed to submit our names in order to go through the barricades.

As early as 8pm, my sister Jed, Arthur, and myself made sure were headed to the city. A 10 minute car ride, a 30 minute train ride, one subway stop, 3 police officers and building security was all it took in order to get to our prime spot.

We were the first few people to arrive at 9:30pm apart from 4 Jewish/Iranian elders who were perhaps Micheal's parents' friends. There were chips, some booze and Micheal, our host welcomed us warmly to his corner office. We looked out the window and lo and behold, the NYE Ball was just outside the corner window. Amazing! I was thanking God for such a great opportunity! Down below the street crowd was watching the big screen TV just a few feet below the ball where TV hosts Ryan Seacrest, Giulliana Rancic and her husband Bill were hosting the live event. I gathered that about 30 minutes before, there was a lucky couple that got married at Times Square.

Soon after we arrrived, more guests started to arrive. As we were warming up, someone dealt with the drinks, another popped a CD and our party got started. I started making friends with a few internationals but bonded mostly with a Columbian lady, Karen who is a fund manager, based in NYC.

As the new year approached, I realized how greatly I have been blessed in the past year and how much more I am looking forward to this coming year. God has indeed dealt with me in many ways and how I have spiritually grown these past two years. I just wished I had someone special to share a kiss.. Oh well, it's Jesus and me again and that's great too! Celebrating it at the 16th floor on Times Square with my sister and my newfound friend, Karen was definitely tops! Perhaps this coming year, my new year's resolution is to be open to falling in love again.

UP-PGH Hope Bags Project

A few months ago in September, my friend Jun Evaristo invited me to celebrate his birthday in Wards 9 & 11 of the Charity Pediatric Department of UP-PGH. There were poor kids with leukemia, meningitis, and all sorts of other conditions. I was touched by his gesture to help these kids on his special day. What moved me most was when I saw this two-day old baby, born premature with an exposed stomach. He was inside a non-working incubator and being heated with two light bulbs from two reading lamps. Her teenage mom felt helpless for her son, who needed medicines she could hardly afford. One vial of albumin, a protein found inside a mother's womb (very similar to egg white), costs P3,450.00. He needs four vials per day. Back then, all my friends and I could give was a prayer and a vow to find a way to help the kids in whatever way we could.

My friend, Lelet Volfango, and I decided to collaborate and make these Hope Bags to raise funds for the kids in PGH. From a seed money of P10k, and with the help of family, friends, strangers & twitter followers, we were able to raise about P102,500.00! I love museums! I love looking at galleries and artwork! Whenever I travel abroad, especially in Europe, I make sure that I alot at least an hour or two looking at the collection in a museum. When my sister said that she got us VIP tickets to the ManilArt festival, I made sure that I found the time. It's a showcase of artwork and collections from different galleries in Manila and abroad showcasing the Philippines' best contemporary artists. There were so many that I liked that I was soo mesmerized that I had forgotten to take pictures of them. At times, I am awestruck and wonder what the inspiration of the artist was, just relishing at how the pictures make me feel.

Here are a few of the artwork that caught my attention and remembered to take pictures of.

1) "Wang-Wang" by Ronald Jeresano - I really liked the message this artist wanted to send across as this little boy shouts positive words in Filipino, spelled out on the painting like "sipag" and "sa akin ang pag-asa." Suddenly, Whitney Houston's intro to "Greatest Love of All" comes to mind... "I believe the children are our future...."

(2) "Lineage" by Malyn Bonayog - Malyn is here posing with her creation. It's an interesting technique she used looks to me like a thumb print.

She went on to explain that that's her picture, smiling on the left-most side and her other ancestors seated in a row to the right. The house in the back is her ancestral house in the Northern part of the Philippines. Baguio? I remember vaguely. The dark figure painted on the right side, just behind where she is standing in this shot, is the face of the oldest member of their clan.

(3) "Nang Sumilip and Bahaghari" by Ricky Ambagan - is an interesting oil on canvas creation. It appears like view of the painter coming from inside a tube-like structure (perhaps a rainbow) .... or is it the other way around? What really caught my attention is the figure of a child in the middle dressed in colorful garb. I thought it would look great in my dining area.

I'm fond of paintings that display LOCAL COSTUMES, CULTURE AND TRIBAL DESIGNS.

When I saw these paintings, I though I had to take a momento.

(4) "Starting Young" by Margarita Lim

(5) and (6) Here are a couple of my favorites from JEF CABLOG from Tam-awan village in Baguio

The women are sooo beautiful. Composition feels like a dream, it's as if you just bumped into these girls in the woods.

We also were able to meet Micheal Cacnio and his brother, Ferdinanc. Micheal is more known for his pinoy children themes on gold-plated brass. While his brother, Ferdinand, specializes in nature, dancers and the female form. I saw both of them but managed to take only a picture with Micheal with his latest theme: kids and balloons.

and a humorous one from his collection, DISCHARGE by Micheal Cacnio. My sis and I thought it was so cool.

Here is Ferdinand Cacnio's creation, the title of which I wasn't able to catch. The tree to me symbolizes strength.

If only I have enough space for a pillar on top of which to display this sculpture.

Last but not the least, Here are a few more that I especially liked.

(1) "The Girl Who Said She Could Fly" by Michelle Pauline Lim

(2) "One Lost" by Ivan Roxas - it looked so much like a photograph yes the details are soo amazing! Micheal Cacnio says it took Ivan about six months to complete this painting. I'd say he has quite a photographic memory!

(3) The title escaped me but this is a creation by ROVI SALEGUMBA. - I looked at this painting and thought, "Are they dating? or are they newlyweds? Who knows?" I thought it would look good on a column in my condo.
